10/18 Journalistic Integrity
Suspending Damage.
There was a class a few weeks ago and we were discussing how ot research and how to interview. We practiced giving an interview. In this article, I felt like the tangible next step for us as researchers is integrity. Meaning are we using our research to uplift and edify or to trivialize a group. Remain curious in your research. Always asking why. by continuously asking why the author was able to conclude students are opting for a GED because the school system is racist, and a struggle. Easier to take an exam and get a GED than go through the public school trauma. The initial viewer would look at the stats of GED rates and make assumptions based on previous research that labels, judges, and holds a group of people in a box. Whereas once you were able to gain a perspective, you can realize that they aren't doing something because of WHO they are in your eyes. However, an action is done based on a compilation of experiences called complex personhood.
I often see news, media making this same mistake. reporting a situation and coming to a pre-informed conclusion without remaining curious enough to the real why. The brown vs Board case was really interesting because the study omitted certain research observations to come to a conclusion that best fit the ideals of politicians. Kicking a group of people while down/because of the image associated and the stigma, it's easier to come to a quick conclusion; it would seem baffling to determine why white children would be playing with black dolls. Well, the theories could be endless; however, without understanding the CONTEXT of who the person is, you won't fully be able to understand the CONTENT of the person, which leads to overgeneralizations and stereotypes. IN conclusion, this article highlighted the need for us to practice integrity in our journalism and research to uplift, find solutions rather than to place blame on the creators of the power injustice.
After reading this post, I not only appreciate all of your insight but am realizing that both of our blogposts make mention of the importance of integrity, overall context, and taking on the still ongoing problems that riddle our school systems (and alternative pathways to education) with racism. Oh and I am still actively LOL-ing at when you said in class the other day, something in regards to feeling as if you run out of posts to comment on because you're on like an a bit of an advanced posting schedule (bc same lmaooooo)
