Take some time to make sure you have a general sense of these different research ideologies.  Where do you feel most aligned in these research ideologies? Then reflect on how these frameworks might shape your approach to one of the questions you pondered in your blog last week. (“If I were to take a positivist approach, I might answer my question this way….  If I took a Constructivist approach, I might answer my question that way.”) You don’t have to be sure – just wonder!

I believe the approach I most align with is.... well, it's complicated. I start off my research in a very positive manner. black and white. I believe this rigidity allows me to quell the critiques of those, like myself, who see things as black and white in terms of numbers. This approach is sometimes hard to gather and sometimes hard to quantify, so I like to use the constructive point of view to add a more human element to the research and give the research some color besides black and white. And finally, when you examine the research and come to a solution, it typically comes down to understanding that the only color that actually matters is green. This is the critical theory where capitalism is often the system that causes the trickle-down effect of inequality, and lots of questions need to be answered.

8. Why does it take 8 hours to teach concepts that only take 30-40 mins to learn?

If I were looking at this from a constructivist perspective, I would look at the implementation of the 8-hour workday and the causes of that. I would also analyze how the length of school corresponds with a typical workday. I would also be critical of how a typical workday has changed from the 20s and 30s and now. With the gig economy and many families unable to even have a parent stay home if they wanted to. Both Parents are out earning a living, so the longer the school day, the longer we can have parents working to boost the economy. Because wages are low to keep business profits high,  Families don't make enough to homeschool or attend private school, so schools are crowded with class sizes of 20-35 kids. This overcrowding of schools leads to taking 90 minutes to teach a a simple lesson that with individual instruction would take 10-15 mins. So the root cause is the system of low pay, not enough at home support causing schools to take longer to teach, these same teachers are overworkex and underpaid and make it hard to maintain a 30 person classroom filled with behavioral problems beccaseu little johnny is seeking validation that he doesn't get at home so johnny acts out distracting others and leading to longer class times.

  1. Hi DaeShawn thank you for sharing, I understand the perspective of being a positivist. Having the clear understanding evidence about research makes it simplistic to get the answers. However there other factors that should be considered when researching not just looking at the positive outcomes.
Your question brings many wonders, I would also look at it at the lens of administration and the laws. If looking at RI what are the policies that RIDE has for these 8 hours school days.
